Ok, we already knew that the Kickstarter project for the 3D-capable VR headset Oculus Rift is going to be funded since day one as it has reached the goal of $250K USD very fast. But now we know the final numbers and the Rift has managed to attract 9522 backers pledging a total of $2,437,430 USD or almost ten times the initial goal. Now the hard part for Palmer Luckey and the team at Oculus begins, because they need to get ready the initial 100 DIY kits of the device for November something like over 7000 Oculus Rift developer kits ready for backers in December. Not to mention that they should also be working on improving the device even further for the release of an even better consumer version sometime next year, all we can do now is wait and hope the team at Oculus will manage to keep their promise.

Meanwhile there is another developer that has announced Oculus Rift support in their upcoming game. After the Doom 3: BFG Edition and Hawken comes Miner Wars: 2081, a first-person action-survival space simulation game set in the year 2081. The game is being developed by an independent software company called Keen Software House and is expected to be released sometime later this year (Q3-Q4 2012). What is interesting to note is that the game is going to support 6DoF movement natively and the developers consider the Rift as a perfect addition for their game. We’ll have to wait and see what they will come up with, but it is very nice that more and more developers are seeing the potential and are going to support the Oculus Rift even before it hits the market in a consumer version.
